How Important is Student Health Insurance?

Many healthy, young college students consider that they can do without spending money on health insurance premiums. They are not ill, they are careful and they are still young. Why should they desire health insurance?

For enrolled students in most universities and colleges there is a growing inclination towards requiring them to have health insurance cover. Health officials generally agree the conditions in the dorms that make students want to live there are the very reasons creating an environment that allows illnesses and viruses to spread uncontrollably. Prescription costs, equipment costs doctors' bills, or even simple flu outbreaks can go into hundreds of dollars.

Quite often some students can run medical bills running into thousands on just one incident, which they find very difficult to pay. For the majority of costs, the colleges or universities normally absorb them through their clinics.

Many parents and their child students may assume that the child is covered under their health insurance policy. Some insurance companies do cover college students on the parents' plan if they are already in the health insurance plan. However, some only cover for local medical practitioners. Should the student go to another state, they may find that they no longer have any health insurance coverage.

The health cost for a child under a parents' health insurance plan is quite low. For doctors' visit the fee may be around $25 dollars and about $50 for emergencies. IF the same emergency arises without a health plan, the bill could be as high as $500 dollars, before the addition of x-rays, extra treatment and sutures. Even a simple thing like a sprain can result in a bill of many hundreds of dollars.

The answer: a student health plan or temporary plan focusing specifically of students who are away from home. Some universities and colleges can offer students their own health plan or have it arranged through a local provider. The rates a generally very reasonable as most will be group plans covering all the students at the institution of learning.

One very good option will cost about $1000 per annum. This insurance health plan will cover the full range of health cover as long as the students meets a minimum number of attendance hours.

Saving only a few dollars is an unjustifiable stance measure against the provision of a health insurance cover. Getting an affordable cover through you college can become a boon should you fall ill or be involved in a serious accident.

And the Geek Shall Inherit the Earth

"Blessed are the geek: for they shall inherit the earth." (inspired by Matthew 5:5)

So you've been a geek from as long as you could hold a game controller or climb up to sit in front of the computer. You were the first kid on the block to tie up your parents' phone lines with a dial-up modem. The letters FPS, RPG, and RTS are more than just alphabet soup to you - they're in your blood. You know more people from the online gaming community, and perhaps you know them better, than you know your next-door neighbor. Years of working on in-game tactics and practicing your hand-eye coordination have left your wits and reflexes sharp.

But maybe your parents, your friends, your teachers, or your spouses think that you've wasted your time on what can be interpreted as a fairly expensive hobby. After all those nights spent gazing blearily at a computer or television screen and shouting yourself hoarse over Ventrilo or Xbox Live, maybe you're thinking that they're on to something; have you been wasting your time and energy on something that doesn't actually have any merit in the real world?

The plain truth is you, as an online gamer, have been building a set of all the tools you need to become an incredibly effective leader in any situation. Let's take a look at three core skills you needed to develop in order to be successful in an online team environment, for example:

  1. Knowing your teammates. Whether your team is competing against computer-controlled bad guys or it's facing off against another team of real live players, knowing both your own strengths and weaknesses and those of your other teammates is imperative. If each member of your team fills the role they at which are the strongest and with which they're most comfortable, success will follow.
  2. Knowing what you're up against. Just jumping into any situation without doing at least a little research first isn't always the best course of action. Yes, fortune favors the bold, but things will go much more smoothly if you or another one of your teammates looks into the kind of things you can expect to encounter in your coming adventure. Sometimes the line between success and failure is razor-thin; just a little extra information can bump you and your team from one side of that line to the other.
  3. Knowing that you can always try again. Let's face it: there will be times that your team may fall short of their goals. Just because you didn't go the distance this time, however, doesn't mean you won't succeed the next time you try. Keeping a positive outlook in the face of adversity means regrouping with your team, taking an honest look at what went wrong and what needs to be done differently, and then motivating each other to get back in there and do it all over again.
It's obvious how these three learned skills - knowing your strengths and weaknesses, knowing what you're getting yourself into, and knowing that minor setbacks can't keep you down for long - can be applied to practically any situation, online or in the real world: whether it be in school, at work, or in your personal relationships, all of these skills can make you successful at whatever you do.

So fire back with those little gems the next time someone runs down your favorite passion. It's not "just a hobby" and it's certainly not mindless entertainment, either! And they said that video games would rot your brain. Shows how much they know!

Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging

Blogging offers marketing, public relations, advertising and customer support opportunities. It is important for businesses to use blogs as a way to teach and stay in touch with customers. Blogs are easy to set up and it is not rare for them to generate profit, but many blog efforts fizzle out before they see a check. Here is a list of seven reasons why blogs fail.

1. Lack of resources.

For a business blog to be successful it is necessary to have the proper resources. This may include people or technology. It is true that not everyone can write a blog. You need people who can write and give your blog a personality.

2. To many advertisements.

If your blog is in serious need of loyal readers, than the last thing you want to do is bombard the few you have with to many advertisements. It is wise to wait until your traffic is high to start putting up ad banners. Once you have established yourself, loyal readers won't care how many advertisements are posted.

3. No forum for reader comments.

Blogs differ themselves from typical web sites because they offer the visitor an opportunity to comment. You can't be fearful of distasteful blog posts. Learning from what people don't like about your company is important. Whether or not you have a comments page, people are still talking about your product. Why not see for yourself the positive and the negative?

4. Quality over Quantity.

A big mistake first time bloggers make is posting too much useless information in hopes of drawing in a larger following. This just leaves a bad impression and doesn't keep many folks coming back.

5. Lack of experience.

Many people think blogging is easy and they can pick it up for their business with out the help of others. It is advised to hire a blog consultant. They can help you realize the benefits of blogging more efficiently and cost effectively. Blog consultants will also prevent poor and uniformed decision making.

6. Investment.

For a blog to be successful it needs to be taken seriously. Invest in your blog and provide the money and other resources it needs. A good blog does not come easy and usually requires a decent amount of time and monetary investment.

7. No clear goal or message.

There are hundreds of reasons to start a business blog but if you don't have a clearly defined goal, you are setting yourself up for failure. You want to ask yourself these questions: What purpose does this blog serve our customers? What purpose does this blog serve our company?

Business Blogs can be very beneficial and a cost effective way to promote your brand. Although most blogs die out before they can reach their full potential, if you remember the basic things not to do, your blog will have a fighting chance to survive.
